Last weekend we visited Pickwell Farm to choose our Halloween pumpkins. We’ve already visited a few times this year and it’s great fun with young children.
Pickwell Farm is located in Netley, Southampton and is very close to Royal Victoria Country Park. When combined they make a lovely day out!
When you arrive there is a large car park and you walk through the gates into the main entrance. Around this area you will find plastic tubs for collecting produce, wheelbarrows and trolleys (big and small) to take around the farm, if need be. There is also an entrance to the large and extensive farm shop.
There is virtually always something to pick at Pickwell. This is some of the produce that is on offer at different times throughout the year: rhubarb, strawberries, broad beans, raspberries, blackberries, runner beans, sweet corn, pumpkins and more.
Visit all year round
We tend to visit a few times in the summer for a fun morning learning and exploring. We usually stock up on strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and runner beans.
In the autumn we always visit to choose our pumpkins, to wander through the corn fields and to see what else we can get our hands on. On this occasion we found some strawberries for our pudding!
So how suitable is Pickwell Farm for families with young children?
We love visiting Pickwell Farm. The enjoyment and education the children get is unquestionable. It is a great PYO Farm and they have a lovely farm shop. However, when considering it’s suitability for families with young children, toilet facilities are essential. There is 1 port-a-loo near the entrance and on the occasion we had to use it, it was very run down, the door didn’t shut properly and it wasn’t clean. If you have young children consider taking a travel potty with you. If you have nappies to contend with it might have to be done in the back of the car!
As previously mentioned, Pickwell Farm is very close to Royal Victoria Country Park (less than 10 minutes by car). We love spending an hour or so picking our produce and then heading over to the Country Park for lunch and a play…and to use their toilet facilities. Royal Victoria Country Park needs a review all by itself but it is definitely worth a visit with young children. They have a shop, cafe, toilet facilities, lots of parks, walks, the seashore and even a miniature steam railway!
